If you have a cat or a dog, or even a reptile or a bird, you may wonder if you can give CBD to pets. Here, we’ll go over what it can do for them, and why some pet owners are turning to this. 

How it Works 

Animals often times have the same endocannabinoid receptors that we have. while not the same, it’s similar because it has both CB1 and CB2 receptors, so it’s something that can help them. you should only give them CBD products, as that’s the safest and there aren’t any side effects. 

Some of the products that are out there for pets are cannabis-specific CBD, so it may have some traces of the THC in it, so it may also get them slightly high. 

Can CBD help them 

Yes it can. 

Seizures definitely happen to animals, including cats and dogs, which causes them to have spasms due to the nerves malfunctioning, not firing correctly, and this can happen when they nap or while they’re trying to sleep. It’s one of the best ways to treat seizures in pets. 

CBD also is good for pain relief, since it can bind directly to the receptors responsible for immune pain and nerve pain. lower dosages also help with the entourage effect, activating your CBD to work better on this, to help with somatic, visceral, along with neuropathic pain that’s much better for those who have to use CBD for their pets. 

It can also help with vomiting and nausea, whether it’s through eating too much too fast, problems with diet and indigestion, or new medications. This can help with their stomach, calming this. It can definitely be good for cats, which eat grass, as they may try to be vomiting themselves. 

It also is great for anxiety and stress. A long car ride, a trip to the vet, all of that can make them anxious, and they may not be feeling so hot.  They may show signs of this. If you’re in an area that has a lot of sounds that are loud, or maybe they are hearing fireworks, this can help with it, as it can reduce the anxiety that lots of cats are feeling. 

A Few questions about it 

Some people are curious about giving their animals CBD, and here, we’ll give you a few tips and things to keep in mind. 

First, is the most common. Will it get the animal high. Cannabis-derived CBD does have small amounts of THC, and it does work a lot better, but it will not get them high. Usually though, if they are dealing with a lot of trauma and stress, the little bit of psychoactivity it causes is not bad. Do not give them full THC however, as it can be very potent, since they have more receptors than we do in many cases. 

Your pet usually feels this within 30 or so minutes of having it, and it can stay within the system for up to 6 hours. 

The best way to give this is basically an oil or tincture, which is how a lot of CBD for pets is usually done. Basically you insert it, open up the mouth, and then put it in there.  This is something that can be a bit hard for some animals, but if you find that the animal is totally against it, give it to them with some foods that they enjoy, such as maybe goat milk, peanut butter, or cream cheese. 

You can mix this with some meds, but always talk to the veterinarian if you’re not sure the results of the medication might be on them.
